Castelnau de Montmiral

No one seems sure but the name seems to translate as the New Castle Upon The hill of the Far Seeing.

The origins of Montmiral are lost in the mists of time and l’Occitane legends.

Traces of Roman remains exist, as yet undocumented.

The hill was important because for long eons it guarded the main route from Montauban to Gaillac.

The present ‘modern’ bastide,  cité médiévale, was built in the 13 th century by the Count of Toulouse as one of a chain of fortifications, forteresse imprenable, to help secure his northern borders from the barbarous raids of  English, Gascons and French.

The town successfully survived the attentions of the ‘Black Prince’ and two further attacks during the French religious wars.

The little town has not changed significantly  since it was built so today enjoys the status of Les d plus beaux village de France.

Mostly Montmiral has dozed peacefully down the century’s and has been home to the Painting school of Montmiral for some 30 plus years.

Courtesy of Francis Pratt there is a more detailed account of Castelnau de Montmiral as ‘further reading‘ linked to the painting “The Promenade (2), enjoy.
