Canvas or ?

The material illustrated here was bought in Paris about 7 years ago, I’ve been unable to obtain more.

I’ve almost run out and wish to buy another roll.

Thus my questions are where to find the ‘right’ material and how to get it to my studio.

As discussed, I’ve enclosed an off cut of the material I’ve been using.

Prior to that I bought in London but that was so long ago I don’t have a record of the source.

Anyone know the name of a this material, contact info for a source?

Ideally a new roll would be slightly less coarse and have the warp and weft at right angles so look indistinguishable from canvas when properly prepared and painted.

Over many years I’ve developed a way of making boards to exactly the sizes I require.

The advantages over stretched canvas including boards are less expensive, more durable.

Advantages of this sample include it is stiff and quite fine so easy to cut and glue.

A finished board provides a stable surface that does not vibrate or give as one works and is generally the same or less weight than canvas on a quality stretcher.

The composite board can be prepared to make a firm painting surface with good ‘tooth’ a surface highly suitable for artist’s oil paint and with reasonable care very long lived

Using standard sizes also eases another considerable expense, reducing the number of frames I need to hold in stock.

Disadvantage, this sample, the weave is not very regular or at right angles, it’s ‘good enough’, just.

One gallery owner has commented adversely on the irregularity.

A former curator of the Tate, London, Sir Norman Ried, told me work on properly prepared board is easier to conserve, likely to last indefinitely so a sound investment.
