Tarn and Gaillac Paintings of this Historic Wine Region.
Henry II Plantagenet King of England (5 March 1133 – 6 July 1189), according to records in The Tower of London, liked Gaillac wines and ordered more as did George Washington and many other famous people.
Introducing a French secret, seductive, at the heart of l’Occitane, Gaillac wines include France’s oldest vines and deliciously most surprising wines, Gaillac wine.
Gaillac wines and my paintings are all with a unique history that dates back to Phoenicians and Roman settlements in a region many call “a paradise on Earth”.
Gaillac, pronounced ‘guy-ack, is remote, isolated until recently and yet producing some of the best wines in France…

Paintings and wines,
Not many people 😶 can offer their guests fine rare wines and have a painting of the château on their dinning room wall.
I can, you could 😃🙂 by buying paintings following my wine recommendations.
I recently started a party in my home with two bottles of Brut de Mayragues, the ancestor of Champagne, a sparkling wine made by the Gaillac Méthode Ancestrale and 100 % bio-dynamic.

Vin du Coq
Think and dream of a region blessed with it’s own benevolent micro climate, noted for exceptionally beautiful landscapes, gourmet foods, a wide variety of produce including ‘Vin du Coq’.
Centuries astern Gaillac merchants started to brand their barrels with a cockerel and when bottling would use a distinctive bottle shape, today the cockerel remains Gaillac Wines traditional brand mark.
The branding was necessary because Bordeaux merchants were passing off as ‘Bordeaux’, the superior wines of Gaillac and pocketing the extra profit.
Today after the disasterous loss of quality caused around 1860 by a tiny yellow louse called phylloxera inadvertently introduced from America which decimated French vines, the Gaillac reputation is being rediscovered, by whom and why is quite a story.
122 x 76 cm (48″ x 30″) A painting with great ‘presence’, if you like what you see here you will love the painting, guaranteed !

This fertile region was until recently considered remote.
People joked with some truth, “even the French don’t go there“.
The beautiful Gaillac Collection has only once been exhibited, has not yet been shown outside of Gaillac.

A unique honour
In July 2019 an invitation arrived at my studio to attend the opening ceremony of the Chinese-Gaillac International “Festival des Lanterns” run in conjunction with the Chinese Government. The festival attracted 450,000 visitors.
The reason, my painting “The Port of Gaillac, 1863,” was the only European artwork to inspire some of the Chinese artists.
“More than a match for anything in the Musee d’Orsay”
said Alain Soreano, author, historian, poet, Maire-Adjoint, Chargé de la Culture et du Patrimoine, Ville de Gaillac, when introducing The Frickers Exhibition, December 2016.
Endorsement : 12.12.2022 « The painting arrived well wrapped and no worse for wear related to the journey. It is even more beautiful in person than online. I love the texture and the use of light. It will be treasured by us as a memory of a great trip and will be the highlight of Morgan’s Christmas morning”.

Vin du Coq, more
Centuries astern Gaillac merchants started to brand their barrels with a cockerel and when bottling would use a distinctive bottle shape, today the cockerel remains Gaillac Wines traditional brand mark.
The branding was necessary because the only way to export Gaillac wines was to send them in barges (gabbare) down the turbulent Tarn river to be sold off the quays of Bordeaux.
Bordeaux merchants were passing off as ‘Bordeaux’, the superior wines of Gaillac and pocketing the extra profit, hence the brand mark burnt onto ever Gaillac ‘tun’ and barrel.
Gaillac wines passed into obscurity during the late 19th century phylloxera epidemic which destroyed most of the vineyards in Europe, most notably in France.
Dream of a region blessed with it’s own benevolent micro climate, noted for exceptionally beautiful landscapes, gourmet foods, a wide variety of produce and ‘Vin du Coq’.
Happily for us, today the Gaillac reputation is being rediscovered, by whom and why is quite a story.
Gaillac are wines are among the oldest wines of the land we now call France with an amazing history.
Records in the Tower of London tell us the Plantagenet king Henry II (from 1154 to 1189) drank Gaillac wines, liked them and ordered more.
As if that is not enough, the Gaillac story includes roots that go at least as deep as the Phoenicians.
Archaeologists tell us it is likely the Phoenicians planted the first vines although the regular harvesting of vines probably occurred earlier.
Certainly the Romans grew vines around Gaillac and Gaillac was where Dom Pérignon worked for 11 years supervising the wines of the abbey.
Champagne and fame
It was at Gaillac that Dom Pérignon learnt how to make sparkling wines before the Church sent him onto another region where he introduced the sparkling wine techniques thereby creating Champagne.
I hope you will enjoy discovering Gaillac wine as much as I have.
A word of caution, Gaillac is a seductive region, you may find you want to live there !
