Haut Medoc, an introduction

This is the newest section of the ‘Picturesque Wine Villages of Bordeaux‘ project so the wine art shown here should be viewed as ‘work in progress’ = watch this space.

As many before me, I was slow to discover the delights of Haut Medoc.

Haut Medoc on the northern bank of The Gironde estuary includes the Côtes de Blaye and cote de Bourg.

The region is something of a Cinderella so may surprise you.

Haut Medoc is overshadowed by the grand reputations of it’s neighbors around St Emilion and on the opposite bank of the Gironde, The Medoc

For a start, this area Haut Medoc has an extremely long history, with vineyards first planted way back in prehistoric times.

Haut Medoc country side is often picturesque, many of the off main route villages and towns have much charm, the region produces a variety of crops including sunflowers and corn.

With a long water frontage parts of the region have a distinctly maritime feel.

There is a marina at Blaye, note though, if approaching by water prudent navigation is essential, currents can be strong with over falls and whirlpools, mud banks often change shape or even shift position.

Together they offer you a selection of over 300 wines, predominately red and white.

Any rosé produced here is sold under the generic Bordeaux appellation.

Wines once made under the ‘Premieres Cotes de Blaye’ appellation are now sold under a newer title, this AOC is a relatively new label and includes Premières Côtes de Blaye.

Under it nonetheless some very good wines are produced.

Châteaux Dubraud and Les Grands Marechaux are good examples.

The reds are mostly based on Merlot, usually simple and approachable in style, the best of the red wines can age well but not for to long, they often display delightful sophistication. Château Roc de Cambes is generally considered an out standing example to a good wine to sample.

The predominantly clay soils are better suited to Merlot so able to create soft supple wines that represent excellent value.
