I first visited Castelnau de Montmiral in 1989 having exhibited at The Mall Galleries, London so I was sent a circular from the Painting School of Montmiral
I arrived with a desire to learn more about my anomalous colour vision from the very remarkable tutor Francis Pratt.
I have never met a more knowledgeable or better fine art, drawing and painting teacher, mentor and these days, also a friend, than Francis Pratt and that includes my 5 years study in British art schools, University of Kent.

Castelnau de Montmiral
L’Occitane, Castelnau de Montmiral, is a ‘target rich’ environment for artists painting in the heart of France.
No one seems sure but the name seems to translate from Occitane as the New Castle Upon The hill of the Far Seeing.
The origins of Montmiral are lost in the mists of time and l’Occitane legends.
Traces of Roman remains exist, as yet undocumented and before that, who knows?
The hill of Castelnau de Montmiral was important because for long aeons it guarded the main route from Montauban to Gaillac with its wines and rich farm lands and the pilgrim’s town of Albi.
The present ‘modern’ bastide, cité médiévale, was built in the 13 th century by the Count of Toulouse as one of a chain of fortifications, ‘forteresse imprenable’, to help secure his northern borders from the ‘Northern Barbarians, the barbarous raids of Gascons, Plantagenets, French and English.
The town successfully survived the attentions of the ‘Black Prince’ and two further attacks during the French religious wars.
This little market town is not changed significantly since it was built so today enjoys status as one of ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages de France‘.
Mostly Montmiral has dozed peacefully down the century’s and has been home to the renowned Painting school of Montmiral for some 30 plus years.
