Israel paintings voices out of the darkness to hear in my Israel paintings series.

The Temple Mount, one of my Israel Landscape Collection by  Gordon Frickers following my first location visit in 1984, while on an extensive camping tour of Israel.

This painting shows us that Israel was laid waste following the Arab Islamic invasion some 1,400 years before I arrived to discover & paint.

This confirms the desolation clearly shown in the collection painted by the Scottish artist David Roberts RA (24 October 1796 to 25 November 1864) and in many travellers tales.

Mark Twain 1867.

Mark Twain visited Israel in 1867  and published his impressions in Innocents Abroad, a semi-autobiographical travelogue by Mark Twain printed in California in 1869.

About Temple Mount he wrote ” Up to within a year or two past, no Christian could gain admission to it or its court for love or money “.

Mark Twain wrote he was amazed by the smallness of the then city of Jerusalem much of which was in ruins.

Mark Twain wrote of his Israel experiences “I could ride for 10 miles in any direction and not meet a single living soul “.

This emotional, unusual picture was one of several I made as general views of Jerusalem, this is one of only two I still have available.

Jerusalem 1844 compared with Jerusalem 1984
Jerusalem 1844, Earliest known photograph.

Jerusalem in 1844 after hundreds of years of Muslim occupation makes a facinating to comparison with the Jerusalem 1984 of my painting created in 1984 and Jerusalem today.

A point to note, before 1959 the Al Aqsa mosque was poorly cared for and the dome was covered in cheap blackened lead.

This very old photograph would have been made on a ‘glass plate’.

I learned to handle and make photographs on glass plates when a 16 year old student studying at Maidstone College of Art.

I am to this day in awe of the quality of images it’s possible to make on glass plates.

The portrait painter Gerard de Rose had enrolled me so has my very grateful and eternal thanks for giving me that opportunity, a story I’ve covered in my book.

Years later knowledge of those delicate handling techniques paid dividends when I was generously permitted to research among the 19th and early 20th century glass plates made by Beken of Cowes. Those images and our conversations provided the inspiration for my painting of the original Royal Yacht Britannia 1893 which became a best selling PRINT.

Jerusalem in The Jewish tradition

To begin to understand the Jewish people about whom Winston Churchill wrote “Some people like the Jews, and some do not.  But no thoughtful man can deny the fact that they are, beyond any question, the most formidable and the most remarkable race which has appeared in the world.

Many people, Jews, Christians, Muslims, see the rock inside the Dome of Al Aqsa mosque as the “Foundation Stone” from which the world initiated.
This is also where by traditional belief, Abraham almost sacrificed Itzhak (Isaac).

The story of Abraham and the sacrifice of Isaac tells us, G-d sometimes makes extra ordinary demands

G-d may test us to the limit but while life is a test, G-d does not require ‘human sacrifice’.

Jewish traditionalists see the rock inside the Dome of the Rock as the “Foundation Stone” from which the world initiated.
This is also where by traditional belief, Abraham almost sacrificed Itzhack.
For certain this is the location of the first and second Temples of Jerusalem.

The Muslims believe without evidence (their Quran makes not one single mention of Jerusalem) that the Dome of the Rock is built on the place where Muhammad rose to the skies during the Night Journey (‘Asraa’) from Mekka to the Temple Mount.
According to this tradition, Muhammad entered a cave to sleep, and from there he was taken by an angel to meet Moses, Elijah, and Jesus.
Some Muslims believe that the footsteps of Muhammad may be seen in the stone, and that two hairs from his bears are kept in the structure.

Many Muslims believe it was built on the site of a 6th century Byzantine church; others believe it is an 8th century construct by the Umayyads.

The golden plated tiles on the dome were first added in 1959–61 by the Jordanians during a major restoration.

Al Aqsa mosque was originally constructed to prevent the rebuilding of the Jewish temple or any church.

In reality Jerusalem is not mentioned even once in the Quran so clearly this story is a later fable designed to create a Muslim claim on this most awesome of Jewish sites.

Today Muslims disrespectful of other religions, unkindly forbid all non Muslims to pray on the Mount.

Israel and Zion

‘Zion’ was a Biblical name for Jerusalem, the word is of Hebrew origin meaning “highest point”, Zion.
Jerusalem is much more than the three thousand years plus, capital city of the Jewish people.

Jerusalem is the intellectual, cultural and spiritual centre of Jewish gravity.

Napoleon Bonaparte 1799

Napoleon Bonaparte in 1799 upon seeing the ruined desolate state of the land when in Israel is the first major historical figure to declare publicly, the longed for wish should be granted, the Jewish people should return to their ancestral home land.
Napoleon Bonaparte of the First French Empire enacted laws that freed European Jews from old Church laws that were restricting them to ghettos, as well as the many laws that limited Jewish rights to property, worship, and careers.

There are contradictory historical viewpoints regarding Napoleon’s intentions and feelings for the Jewish community of Europe.

For certain Napoleon Bonaparte did much to liberate and increase the social standing of the much oppressed Jews in France and Europe in general during and after his rule is undeniable.

Jesus and Jerusalem.

It was in Jerusalem ‘The Last Supper’ was eaten as a Passover meal by Jesus and his apostles.

This beautiful commemorative meal is and has been celebrated by Jewish people for well over 2000 years and resounds today, commemorating escape from slavery to freedom.

The Haggadah, the book used for when celebrating the Pesach (Passover) meal states, “And Thou Shall Tell Thy Son In That Day Saying: It Is Because Of That Which The Lord Did For Me When I Came Forth Out Of Egypt” Exodus xiii, 8.

This painting is made from location studies which clearly show how under developed, poor and neglected Jerusalem was during the long Muslim occupation, even into the 1980’s.

In 1950, Jordan annexed East Jerusalem as part of its larger annexation of the West Bank.

Israel captured East Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War and after repeated peace offers to the Arabs, all refused, East Jerusalem is as of 1980 annexed, to Israel.

Today this site has a new life and a vibrant future.
